Pinewood Derby Rules

 

RULES FOR PINEWOOD DERBY

1.        Car must be official BSA Grand Prix racer car, BUILT THIS YEAR

2.        Only the wheels and axles that are in the kit may be used

3.        After checking in, no adult is allowed within race area except starting gate personnel and the judges.

CAR SPECIFICATION

1.  WIDTH:  Over all width shall not exceed 23/4 inches.

2.  LENGTH:  Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches.

3.  WEIGHTWeight shall not exceed 5 ounces or 32 hundredths of a pound (.32).  No loose materials of any kind are permitted in the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided that it is securely built into the car.

4.  SPRINGING:  The car should not ride on any type of springs.

5.  DETAILS:  Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and weight.

6.  ATTACHMENTS:  The car must be free wheeling with no starting devices. 

7.  INSPECTION:  Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete.  The inspectors have the right to disqualify those cars which do not meet these specifications.

BUILDING INSTRUCTION

1.  DESIGNING THE CAR BODY:  Choose your favorite design.  NOTE: If the car design you choose has a narrow body, make sure the areas where the axles are inserted into the body remain 13/4 inches wide, and in the original slots or the wheels will not fit over guide strips.  NO EXTENDED WHEEL BASES ALLOWED.  Bottom of car must be a minimum of 3/8 inches off the track or it will not go down the track.

2.  WHEELS:  Remove seam from wheels by lightly sanding.  Width of wheels cannot be altered.  Wheels must remain FLAT.  No MACHINED wheels to a smaller size.  WASHERS, BUSHINGS, and HUBCAPS are PROHIBITED.

3.  INSTALLATION OF WHEELS AND AXLES:  Pre-lubricate axle where wheel rotates just below axle head. Use POWDERED GRAPHITE ONLY.  DO NOT use regular oil or silicone spray.  Slide wheels over axles, then gently tap into body grooves to within 1/32 inch of car body.  Make sure wheels turn freely.

4.  OTHER RULES:  All rules in car kit, unless otherwise noted in these rules, apply.

5.  NO KIT CARS ALLOWED!  These are cars purchased at a hobby shop already made, and DO NOT meet scout Pinewood Derby specifications.
